Epoxy coatings typically are a two- or three-part coating system that chemically cure as the individual components react to each other and form a linked network of epoxy compounds that form a chemically inert barrier that many times is also able to withstand significant blunt force.
Epoxy coatings are prevalent in industrial, commercial and residential applications due to their versatility and effectiveness in providing corrosion and erosion protection. Specifically, epoxy resins can differ with unique ability to withstand specific chemicals such as acids and amines. As a result, there are many different types of epoxies that are used for both atmospheric and immersion coating systems.
The common requirement, no matter the type of epoxy coating, is that surface preparation is very important to the success of that coating and providing a long life of corrosion protection. HoldTight® 102 can play an important role in successful and effective surface preparation procedures for epoxy coatings. HoldTight® 102 when used as an additive in water for pressure washing, wet abrasive blasting and ultra-high-pressure water jetting will help the water better remove soluble salts and contaminants for the steel substrate leaving a very clean surface that is ready to receive the first coat of epoxy.
In addition, because the surface is void of soluble salts and contaminants, it will not flash rust for typically 1-3 days. This is very meaningful to coatings applicators, engineers and asset owners knowing that they are paying for a corrosion protection system that is well adhered to the substrate besides providing chemical corrosion protection.
